About Us
The Newport Navy Choristers was founded in 1953 by a group of Naval War College and Fleet wives and was initially known as the Navy Wives’ Chorus. They soon expanded to include husbands and active duty personnel from other Naval Station Newport commands. Today the chorus is comprised of active duty, reserve and retired personnel of all the Armed Services, civilian employees of the Department of Defense, and spouses and children age 16 and over.
A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Choristers perform four to five major concerts each year to benefit local non-profit charitable and civic organizations. In addition to these regularly scheduled performances, the Choristers participate in special community events and provide musical support for Naval War College and Naval Station Newport command functions.
Two subgroups of the main chorus, the Nautical Notes and the Sea Chanteys, perform at the Veterans’ Home and at other nursing homes and assisted living residences in the local area.
The Choristers’ repertoire encompasses music from many time periods and genres, from classical to Broadway, and patriotic to current pop music. Chorus members enjoy being able to bring music into the lives of others and derive great satisfaction in knowing that their performances generate funds that assist local non-profit organizations in providing services that improve the quality of life for people in our community.
